Torrential rain made it impossible for aircraft to land in Sydney

Qantas 747 on Newcastle airport

Newcastle’s landing strip, which is shared with the RAAF, was the closest large enough to handle a 747.

More than 200 passengers remained on the plane as it was refueled.

“A Qantas flight has stopped for a brief visit after being redirected to stay out of some nasty weather in Sydney,” Newcastle Airport’s Facebook page says.

“Our friends at the RAAF Base are taking care of the B747 and its 220 passengers; the plane will finish refueling shortly and continue its trip to Sydney.”
